The unwanted feature can occur hereditarily or through weight gain with loss of soft tissue elasticity. Regardless of the cause, double chin procedures work to enhance the neckline angle.

At the Toronto Plastic Surgeons, we offer a number of cosmetic plastic surgery and non-invasive treatment options available to eliminate a double chin and create a pleasing neck contour. The most effective include some form of minimally invasive liposuction, improving the contour that leads to the double chin.

Different Types of Double Chin Surgery

The following high-tech devices are all available at the Toronto Plastic Surgeons. Your surgeon will select the right technology for you.

SmartLipo

SmartLipo™ emits energy using a small laser probe that breaks down and liquefies the fat, facilitating easy fat removal with a microcannula that minimizes discomfort.

BodyTite Lipo

BodyTite™ uses electrical current waves to liquefy the fat and coagulate the blood vessels, minimizing any post-operative discomfort, bruising and swelling. BodyTite technology gives the best soft tissue contraction of the many devices with a 40-60% contraction.

VASERLipo

VASERLipo™ is a gentle energy-assisted device. VASERLipo’s ultrasound energy does not kill the fat cells, it loosens them for removal, preserving them and keeping them viable for transplantation if needed.

Evoke Submentum, CoolSculpt Mini and SculpSure Submentum.

These are all devices that can reduce your double chin without surgery. The Evoke Submentum uses radiofrequency energy and the CoolSculpt Hypothermia and SculpSure deploys laser hyperthermia to kill the double chin fat cells. Usually 2-3 treatments, one month apart are required to achieve a noticeable reduction in the double chin.

How is a Double Chin Surgery Performed?

The specifics of the double chin procedure will vary depending on the device chosen. During your initial consultation, the surgeon will discuss the pros and cons of each fat reduction devices and will recommend the best device to align with your goals.

Most procedures are performed easily under local anesthesia. Once the given fat reduction device has loosened the chin and neck fat for removal, a very small tube (cannula) will be inserted under the skin, gently removing the excess fatty tissues. BodyTite liposuction will also tighten the neck skin.

Preparing for a Double Chin Surgery

To ensure a successful double chin surgery, it is advised that patients follow certain steps in the weeks leading up to your procedure date:

  • Smoking should be stopped 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after the procedure.
  • Patients must cease taking Aspirin or any medication that contains Aspirin 2 weeks before.
  • Patients must not consume any food or drink 6 hours before the procedure. Small sips of water are permitted, however.

What to Expect Post Double Chin Surgery

The patient’s neck area will be bruised and feel tight immediately after the procedure – side effects that will resolve within the first week. Patients will return home in a head-wrap dressing to minimize swelling and ensure the skin correctly conforms to the new contour.

In the days that follow, patients should spend as much time as possible in an upright position to speed up the healing process. Sun exposure should be avoided to protect from sun damage.

It’s important that patients follow the thorough care instructions provided by their surgeon. Doing so will shorten the recovery period and ensure no complications are experienced.
