Recovery Period Following a Tumescent Liposuction?

Modern liposuction techniques that use energy-assisted devices have a rapid recovery period. It is not uncommon for patients to undergo tumescent liposuction in numerous zones and return to very light, sedentary activities the following day.

How Long Does it Take to Perform a Tumescent Liposuction?

Depending on the thickness of fat being targeted, a tumescent liposuction takes around 30-45 minutes per zone.

What is a Tumescent Liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction is a cosmetic procedure designed to eliminate stubborn fatty regions of the body that remain unresponsive to diet and exercise. It’s an effective solution for targeting fat in various areas, including the face, neck, abdomen, waist (often referred to as ‘love handles’), and thighs. The primary goal of the tumescent technique is to enhance body contours, boosting self-confidence and self-image.

Distinct from conventional liposuction techniques, tumescent liposuction introduces a sterile fluid containing dilute local anesthesia to the targeted fatty areas. This approach not only facilitates the fat removal process but also ensures the procedure is less painful compared to traditional methods.

At Toronto Plastic Surgeons, we employ the BodyTite™ system—a cutting-edge, energy-assisted device that liquefies fat cells. This technology offers several advantages, such as reduced bruising, pronounced contraction, and smoother contours. Once the fat cells are liquefied with BodyTite™, they are then aspirated and extracted using slender suction cannulas, typically ranging from 2-4 mm in diameter.

Am I a Good Candidate for Tumescent Liposuction?

Tumescent liposuction is a procedure that is perfect for anyone disheartened by pockets of fat that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. The candidate will want to address areas of fat that are disproportionate to the rest of the body.

They will ideally be in good physical and mental health, only slightly over their target weight, and have realistic expectations about the results the procedure can achieve.

Tumescent Liposuction Surgery Risks & Complications

Like every procedure, BodyTite-assisted tumescent liposuction has a small chance of potential complications. To minimize the likelihood of complications, it is paramount to select a highly experienced, trusted tumescent liposuction surgeon. The team at Toronto Plastic Surgeons has years of experience performing liposuction procedures. Significant complications are uncommon and, in the rare event they occur, are expertly managed.

  • Contour Irregularities: If patients do not obtain the results they were looking for, a follow-up procedure can be scheduled to ensure adequate body contour.
  • Fluid Accumulation: In some cases, the procedure can result in fluid accumulation. However, this should subside in the days following the procedure.
  • Numbness: The area may feel numb following the surgery, but this side effect is typically temporary.
  • Infection: Although infections are very rare with respect to this procedure, Dr. Bell and his experienced team still take every precaution to ensure that the surgery is a smooth, seamless experience.

Preparing for a Tumescent Liposuction

Before the procedure date, there are certain steps to follow which will shorten the recovery period and lessen the chance of any complications:

  • Quit smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery.
  • No alcohol 1 week prior.
  • Any medication needs to be reviewed by the surgeon.
  • Do not shave in the target area.
  • Do not eat or drink anything 8 hours before surgery.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Our surgeons will provide additional guidelines during your initial consultation. For optimal results, the guidelines must be followed.

How is a Tumescent Liposuction Performed?

The areas of unwanted fat are marked out before the insertion of a tumescent solution of diluted local anesthesia that contains lidocaine, epinephrine, and a buffering medication. The solution is inserted into the target area of fat, causing the fatty layer to swell and blood vessels to shrink, giving your surgeon complete control of the treatment area.

Once swollen, small incisions are made through a small cannula instrument, which suctions away unwanted pockets of fat. No stitches are required as the incisions are small enough to heal naturally.

What to Expect Post Tumescent Liposuction Surgery

After your surgery, you can expect some minor yet common side effects:

Swelling: Post-surgery, patients will experience some swelling in the treated areas. However, the use of energy-assisted devices typically results in minimal bruising, making the recovery process aesthetically more favourable.
Bruising: While energy-assisted devices minimize bruising, some patients may still experience slight discoloration, which will fade over time.
Sensation: Some patients might experience temporary numbness or altered sensation in the treated areas.

Post-operative Care:

Compression Garment: To ensure the treated area heals with the desired shape and contours, a compression garment must be worn. For the initial three weeks, it should be worn for 22 hours a day. After this period, it’s recommended to wear the garment during the day and remove it in the evening and overnight, continuing this until the area has fully recovered.

Tumescent Liposuction Recovery

Day 1-2: Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation and aid in the healing process.
Day 2: A significant portion of the initial swelling should subside, though some residual swelling might persist.
Day 3: Patients can typically return to work, provided their job is not physically demanding. It’s essential to avoid any activities that strain the treated areas.
Day 4-7: Light exercises, such as stretching or gentle yoga, can be resumed. However, patients should avoid any high-impact activities.
Week 3-4: By this point, most of the swelling should have disappeared, allowing the full benefits of the procedure to become visible.
Week 4-6: High-impact and strenuous activities, like running and weight training, can be safely resumed.

Tumescent Liposuction FAQs

The Toronto Plastic Surgeons have performed many tumescent liposuction procedures over the years and during this period we’ve answered many questions and queries from patients-to-be. During your initial consultation, you’ll be able to ask any of your personal questions.

Is Getting a Tumescent Liposuction Painful?

Tumescent liposuction comes with far less discomfort than traditional liposuction methods. The anesthesia injected minimizes operative pain and, once this wears off, patients manage post-operative discomfort with pain medication.

The low-level discomfort means patients can return to work and regular activities much faster. In addition to comfort, the most important feature of BodyTite-assisted liposuction is soft tissue contraction of up to 30-60% following treatment.

What Does “Tumescent” Mean?

Tumescent refers to the action of becoming swollen. In liposuction terms, anesthesia is injected into the target area to encourage swelling which helps reduce bleeding and makes contouring easier.
