How Long Does it Take to Perform a Male Rhinoplasty?

A male rhinoplasty procedure (nose job) can take anywhere between 3 hours, depending on the complexity of the cosmetic work needed.

What is a Male Rhinoplasty

The nose is a prominent, important feature central to the structure and balance of the face. When the nose is large, it can overpower the other facial features, while a small nose can lack a certain degree of masculinity.

Male rhinoplasty is a procedure that reshapes and resizes the nose to produce a highly attractive nose. As well as improving facial aesthetics, a male rhinoplasty can repair functional issues related to breathing and airflow.

Male rhinoplasty is one of the more difficult males cosmetic surgeries. Only the top cosmetic facial surgeons excel at it, developing the kind of rhinoplasty reputation that Dr. Bell enjoys. A rhinoplasty and nose revision and repair is a technical procedure that requires the highest level of skill. As such, patients should only seek out the services of a reputable and experienced male rhinoplasty surgeon.

The Toronto Plastic Surgeons utilize advanced surgical techniques and decades of experience to leave you with long-lasting and natural-looking results.

Am I a Good Candidate for Male Rhinoplasty?

Male rhinoplasty is a procedure to rectify aesthetic naso-facial concerns such as bridge bumps, bridge scoops, bulbous tips, over-projected noses, plunging tips, crooked noses, wide nostrils, a crooked septum, and a wide nostril base.

Good male rhinoplasty candidates will be in proper physical and mental health and have realistic expectations about the outcome. The Toronto Plastic Surgeons also recommend that patients wait until their nose has stopped growing (18-19 years old) before considering the procedure.

While we invite all those interested in this procedure to reach out to the Toronto Plastic Surgeons for a consultation.

Male Rhinoplasty Benefits

Straighten Crooked Nose

Makes alterations that straighten a crooked nose to boost self-confidence.

Reduce Nasal Bones and Tip

Reduces wide nasal bones that make the nose look large and create a more defined tip.

Male Rhinoplasty Risks & Complications

Like every procedure, a male rhinoplasty comes with a small chance of potential complications. The team at Toronto Plastic Surgeons has years of experience performing male rhinoplasty. Significant complications are uncommon and, in the rare event they occur, are expertly managed.

  • Irregularities of the Nose Bridge: The shifting of bones may result in small irregularities of the nose bridge, but this can be adjusted with simple molding and sanding down.
  •  External Scars: Typically, the external scar on the columella heals completely, but lasers may be necessary to improve the appearance of the scars.
  •  Compromised Breathing: To avoid compromised breathing, our expert team performs airway surgery during the procedure.
  • Infections: Infections are extremely rare and we take every precaution to ensure a smooth experience.

Different Types of Male Rhinoplasty

Male rhinoplasty surgery can broadly be divided into two categories: external and internal. The Toronto Plastic Surgeons are experienced in both types and will perform the best approach to suit your desired outcome.

External Rhinoplasty

An external male rhinoplasty involves changing the complex anatomy of the nasal tip in order to produce natural-looking results. An external rhinoplasty is performed through a columellar incision and elevates the nasal tip skin over the tip and bridge, exposing the structures to be addressed.

Internal Rhinoplasty

An internal male rhinoplasty addresses obstructed airways, minor tip problems, or reducing a bridge bump. The nasal incisions are placed inside the nose.

Male Rhinoplasty Alternatives

Injection Rhinoplasty

An injection rhinoplasty can be an excellent option for patients who want to change their naso-facial shape, without undergoing rhinoplasty surgery. The procedure involves injecting dermal soft tissue fillers under the nasal skin to improve the appearance of bridge bumps, bridge scoops, crooked noses and bulbous tips.

How is a Male Rhinoplasty Performed?

Male rhinoplasty procedures are performed within our comfortable state-of-the-art surgery suites. The surgery is completely personalized to the goals defined during your initial consultation.

To ensure the best results, a computer-simulated rhinoplasty is a part of each consultation to accurately depict the outcome you might expect from your rhinoplasty.

On the day of the surgery, general and local anesthesia will be administered to ensure a completely pain-free procedure. From here, the surgeon will make a small incision (external rhinoplasty or internal rhinoplasty) to access the nasal anatomy and make the planned alterations, including bridge reduction and tip shaping. The nostrils may need to be reduced and narrowed and airway/airflow surgery performed to ensure there will be less risk of airway obstruction after the surgery.

Patients will then rest in our recovery room for a couple of hours before being assessed by our specialist nursing team and returning home.

Preparing for a Male Rhinoplasty

To ensure a successful male rhinoplasty, it is advised that patients follow certain steps in the weeks leading up to your procedure date:

  • Smoking should be stopped 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks after the procedure.
  • Patients must cease taking Aspirin or any medication that contains Aspirin 2 weeks before.
  •  Patients must not consume any food or drink 6 hours before the procedure. Small sips of water are permitted, however.
  • Avoid sun damage 2 weeks before surgery. This can be achieved by wearing sunscreen.

What to Expect Post Male Rhinoplasty Surgery

For the significant lifelong aesthetic improvement, a male rhinoplasty brings, the procedure boasts an impressively short recovery period for patients.

Patients will return home with an internal packing and cast designed to minimize the risk of bleeding from the septal airway surgery. This packing will be removed 3 days later by our nursing team and the cast removed at one week, along with any external sutures.

Male Rhinoplasty Recovery

Day of Surgery: Immediately after the surgery, bruising and swelling is apparent under the eyes. The patient returns home with internal nose packing to minimize the risk of bleeding.

Day 3: Packing is removed to allow the patient to resume easy breathing.

Week 1: The external rhinoplasty scar is now barely visible, and most patients return to work.

Week 3: Initial swelling and bruising have now subsided, allowing patients to feel less self-conscious in public.

Week 6: Intensive physical activities can be resumed as the swelling has almost fully subsided and the nose appears more natural.

Male Rhinoplasty FAQ

Is Getting a Male Rhinoplasty Painful?

No pain will be felt by the patient during the men’s rhinoplasty due to the administration of anesthesia. Swelling and discomfort are expected in the weeks that follow but there is no extreme or long-term pain.

Is There a Difference Between Male and Female Rhinoplasty?

While the techniques applied to male and female rhinoplasties are the same, an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon understands that the cosmetic outcomes desired by the genders may differ.

The proportions of the male nose and face and what is perceived as handsome and attractive including nasal length, width, slope, and tip shape are quite different from what is considered attractive for female naso-facial balance and proportion. By using computer imaging and simulated surgery during your consultation, the ranges of outcomes that can be achieved will be presented to ensure you can “try before you buy”.

How Long Will the Results of My Male Rhinoplasty Last?

A male rhinoplasty changes the naso-craniofacial structure and will last for a lifetime. Of course, the nose can still be broken and shift, but this would require significant force.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Recieve Male Rhinoplasty?

The Toronto Plastic Surgeons recommends patients wait until their nose has stopped growing (18-19 years old) before considering the procedure.

Can I Exercise After Male Rhinoplasty?

It is advised that patients return to light physical exercise after 4 weeks and more intensive exercise can be resumed after 6 weeks.
