Thinning hair is one of the most distressing changes women experience as they age. While mostly associated with men, hair loss affects nearly half of women by the age of 50. Female pattern hair loss is generally thinning on top of the head creating “see-through hair”, but, unlike men, it usually does not lead to baldness.

The initial recovery of the FUE Female hair transplant lasts just 2 to 3 days. During these first days, a soft dressing is used to cover the very tiny FUE harvest sites on the back of the scalp.
Due to meticulous and careful techniques, the hair transplant for woman procedure usually takes between 4 and 8 hours, depending upon how many FUE grafts are to be transplanted.

With its negative impacts on physical appearance, hair loss can be extremely distressing. A female hair transplant is an effective treatment that positively reverses the signs of hair loss to improve a woman’s physical appearance by restoring the hairline and thickening the hair.
The latest automated, robotic devices, such as the NeoGraft and ARTAS systems, make modern hair restoration less invasive and more accurate, offering better results than the old skin grafting methods.
The Toronto Plastic Surgeons has a range of hair restoration options available for women experiencing hair loss. Our expert team creates a tailored plan with the latest technology to restore your natural hairline and improve density.

Like all procedures, a female hair transplant comes with the risk of potential complications. The best thing patients can do to minimize the likelihood of complications is to select a trusted surgeon. The team at Toronto Plastic Surgeons have been performing female hair transplants for many years. Significant complications are uncommon and, in the rare event they occur, are expertly managed.
A woman hair transplant is a procedure that will appeal to women experiencing thinning hair. Patients should have healthy hair in their donor site (normally the back of the scalp) as these hair follicles will be extracted and implanted in the designated recipient area that is thinning.
Good candidates should be in good physical and mental health and lack any medical conditions that will disrupt their recovery. It is also important to have realistic expectations about the results.
To prepare for a female hair transplant, there are some specific instructions to follow to aid recovery:
The robotic and automated hair restoration methods of ARTAS and Neograft FUE are effective in treating female pattern hair loss patients and they come with no linear scarring.
During the procedure, individual Follicular Unit Hair grafts are removed from the back and/or side of the scalp with a tiny rotating punch. After administering the anesthesia to the transplant site, a tiny needle is used to slit between existing hairs creating a recipient graft site, allowing placement of the FUE hair grafts. This sequence is repeated until the entire target area has been treated.
Compared to traditional “strip graft” hair transplant methods, a female hair transplant using Neograft FUE or ARTAS comes with less discomfort and faster recovery times.
Some mild pain and discomfort will be felt following the procedure but this will subside after a couple of days. Patients also benefit from not needing to follow special maintenance. However, the recipient should wait up to 12 months for the final results to show.
Day 2-3: Most mild pain and discomfort will subside, and low-impact regular daily activities can be resumed.
Day 3-4: Swelling peaks.
Day 5-7: Most patients return to work.
Week 2: New hair growth will begin to hide the donor area at the back of the scalp.
Week 4: All regular exercise activities can be resumed.
During your initial consultation, the Toronto Plastic Surgeons will decide which of the two automated hair restoration techniques is best for your unique female pattern hair loss.
Neograft FUE Harvest (an automated rotatory micro-punch) and ARTAS Harvest (a robotic rotatory micro-punch).
Non-surgical treatments are often the best place to start when it comes to reversing hair thinning. Many of the factors that lead to female hair loss respond to the non-surgical hair restoration program and may not need FUE transplantation.
Low-level light laser therapy on the scalp stimulates hair bulbs to become resistant to hair loss.
A combination of the necessary nutrients and medical-grade biological stimulants is applied as a medicated shampoo.
A topical serum of nutrients combined with 15% Minoxidil that increases blood supply and other essential elements can be applied to weak hair bulbs.
Growth factors found in the patient’s blood are injected into the scalp to revive dormant hairs and minimize ongoing hair loss.

No. The use of local anesthesia means that female hair transplant patients won’t feel any pain. In the days that follow the procedure, mild discomfort will be felt. Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) is used during the local anesthesia to ensure the whole procedure is comfortable.
By lowering the hairline, an FUE hair transplant can help reduce the size of the forehead. Hair can be grafted from the back and/or side of the scalp and inserted to the front of the hairline.
Female hair transplant patients should wait 48 hours before they wash their hair gently with cups of water – no direct shower on the scalp in the first few weeks. When the time comes, patients should wash very gently for the first 5 days so as not to damage hurt newly implanted follicles.
Yes. This is what makes a female hair transplant so appealing. Because hair follicles are taken from healthy sites at the back and side of the scalp, they are permanent. Additional hair transplants may be necessary when other genetic hair begins to thin on the top of the head.
