From facials that address signs of aging to body-contouring techniques that help you achieve your ideal figure, Toronto Plastic Surgeons Wellness Centre will discuss the most common procedures women over 50 pursue to achieve radiant, younger-looking skin and a toned, firm physique.

What Happens to Our Skin When We Enter our 50s?

During aging, women experience reduced estrogen levels, which leads to decreased collagen production and skin oils. Menopause occurs in the early to mid-50s, which can exacerbate these imbalances, leading to signs of aging on the face and body. Without regular collagen production, it’s more likely that wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots will begin to appear.

No matter your age, you should moisturize regularly, wash your face, and avoid direct sunlight without wearing SPF—but you cannot prevent the effects time has on our skin. Environmental, genetic, and hormonal factors all age our skin. Still, fortunately, there are many procedures and treatments available to rejuvenate and refresh even the most severe skin concerns.

Popular Surgical Procedures for Women Over 50

Whether you want to address sagging skin, fine lines, or loss of volume, or to contour your body to get back to your dream figure, Toronto Plastic Surgeons Wellness Centre offers many procedures that will turn back the clock and make you look youthful and refreshed.

Facelift

A facelift procedure can refer to a number of different procedures designed to change the appearance of the lower face, including the cheeks, jowls, and neck. Typically, incisions are placed in front of and behind the ear. We also offer men’s facelift procedures so everyone can have youthful, firm skin.

People choose facelift surgery in order to achieve a smoother, more youthful, lifted facial appearance. Ultimately, a facelift can be a truly effective way to counter the effects of aging, gravity and sun exposure, which can leave your face looking older than you actually feel.

Brow Lift

We offer several different brow and forehead lift techniques. The technique we choose together will depend on your age, facial structure, current eyebrow position, and what we determine is achievable.

Open Brow Lift

During an open brow lift, we make an incision across the forehead, either along the hairline or skin creases. Muscles are softened, and excess fat is removed. The remaining skin is pulled down, and the brow is stitched into its new position.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

An endoscope is a narrow, hollow instrument with a fibre-optic light source and a camera. We make tiny incisions in the forehead to insert the endoscope, pass operating instruments through the tube, and see inside with the camera. The endoscopic lift is considered a safer option, with lower risks of infection, scarring, numbness, and hair loss.

Limited Incision

A hybrid of the open brow lift and the endoscopic brow lift, the limited incision approach is a non-endoscopic technique that uses small incisions, particularly effective for reducing forehead wrinkles or frown lines between your eyebrows. Any scars are well hidden along the hairline.

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, or ‘eyelid reduction’ or ‘eye bag removal,’ is a common cosmetic surgery procedure designed to rectify the signs of aging around the eyes. The skin surrounding our eyes loses elasticity as we age, causing the upper and lower eyelids to sag. This loose skin can lead to unsightly eye bags and vision-obscuring drooping eyelids.

The blepharoplasty procedure trims away excess skin and tightens the muscles around the eyes, leaving you with a refreshed, youthful appearance and no more interference with your line of vision. This short, effective procedure can reverse unwanted eye bags and address puffy, saggy, or droopy-looking eyes with very little downtime.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat to tighten the abdomen. The procedure can also restore muscles that have been weakened or separated, creating a firmer profile.

No matter how often you train or how many sit-ups you do, extra skin over the abdomen won’t tighten on its own. For those who have lost a significant amount of weight or gone through pregnancy, stretched skin can be a problem.

The tummy tuck will remove all excess skin and stretch marks in the area, leaving patients with a smooth, tight exterior that matches their reduced body mass. If you’re a man interested in this procedure, Toronto Plastic Surgeon Wellness Centre offers men’s tummy tuck treatments.

Popular Non-Surgical Procedures for Women Over 50

If you’re not ready to go under the knife just yet, or you don’t have severe concerns to address, the non-surgical route offers many technologically advanced, non-invasive treatments that can give you glowing skin.

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is a treatment used to improve the skin’s overall texture. These peels use a chemical solution applied to the skin that gently removes the skin’s outermost layer, revealing more youthful skin with fewer imperfections and fine lines, more even texture and tone, and minimized scarring and pitting.

Chemical peeling may also stimulate collagen production, which improves the skin’s overall appearance. There are two main types of deep chemical peels: a glycolic peel and a salicylic acid peel.

Glycolic Peel

A glycolic peel uses a highly concentrated glycolic acid solution to remove the outermost layer of skin. Glycolic acid is a powerful exfoliant that helps minimize imperfections, improve the skin’s overall appearance, and rejuvenate the skin’s look by gently removing the skin’s outermost layer, revealing more evenly toned layers beneath.

Salicylic Acid Peel

Salicylic acid is a type of peel that uses a beta-hydroxy acid to act as an exfoliant. The salicylic acid works to slough off the outermost layer of skin, eliminating imperfections and revealing smoother, more youthful skin.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are a type of non-surgical injection that can address a myriad of concerns and improve the appearance of various facial features. Dermal fillers can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, restore facial volume, plump your lips, and even reduce asymmetry in the nose. These injections are administered just under the skin, and several types of dermal fillers are available.

Dermal filler treatments offered by Toronto Plastic Surgeons Wellness Centre include Juvederm, Restylane, Revanesse, Teosyal, Volumalift, Radiesse, and Sculptra.

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting involves taking fat from one area of the body and redistributing it to other areas. This procedure is often used to perform Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBL) but can also add volume to the face to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles without using a filler. You can also graft fat to the chin in place of a chin implant or the breasts for natural augmentation. Fat grafting has minimal downtime, takes around 45 minutes to perform, and you can return to work the next day.

Microneedling

Microneedling involves a small, reciprocating micro-needle pen that creates tiny punctures in the skin, prompting the body to produce new collagen and elastin fibres as part of the healing process. Excess collagen and elastin cause the skin to plump and thicken, reducing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and acne scars.
