A liposuction procedure boasts a quick recovery period, particularly when using energy-assisted devices such as SmartLipo™, BodyTite™, and VASERLipo™. Depending on how many zones are being treated, it is recommended that patients take 5-10 days to recover.
Most liposuction procedures are performed under local anesthesia and light sedation and take between 1-4 hours, depending on the number of zones.
Sometimes, diet and exercise are just not enough to achieve the results you’d like. In those cases, modern, high-tech liposuction represents an efficient and pain-acceptable way to achieve the body you’ve always dreamed of! Not only will a liposuction procedure significantly reduce the risk of health-related issues, but it will also have a significant effect on self-confidence and self-worth!
In essence, the procedure involves contouring the body by gently removing unwanted fat through small, hidden access ports. Modern liposuction uses internal devices, like BodyTite (radiofrequency energy), SmartLipo (laser energy) and/or Vaser lipo (ultrasound energy) to ensure skin contraction, smoother results, and gentle fat removal surgery. Common locations for a liposuction procedure include the abdomen, love handles surgery, inner and outer thighs, hips, inner knees, arms, bra lines and double chins (occasionally breasts and calves).
At their state-of-the-art facilities, The Toronto Plastic Surgeons utilize energy-assisted devices that heat, liquefy, and coagulate unwanted fat, thereby reducing the risk of bruising, swelling, and discomfort. In doing so, the Toronto Plastic Surgeons ensure that the procedure is a gentle affair that features wonderful results and a painless recovery period.
While there are no specific traits that dictate candidacy, proper physical health and realistic expectations can make the recovery process more seamless. Fundamentally, a candidate for a liposuction procedure is someone who would like to remove localized areas of excess fat that detracts from their ideal shape and contour.
Please note that, if a patient is pregnant or excessively overweight, they may not be good candidates for a liposuction procedure with the Toronto Plastic Surgeons. Finally, liposuction procedures are not recommended for patients with illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity or hypertension.
We invite all those interested in this procedure to reach out to Toronto Plastic Surgeons for a consultation. However, if you do not feel that this is right for you, please visit our non-surgical procedure page.
By removing excess fat and transforming a patient’s physical appearance, a liposuction procedure will boost self-confidence and self-worth.
At its core, a liposuction procedure is designed to improve a person’s shape. Not a weight-loss technique, successful liposuction is measured in inches and better shape, not pounds lost. Patients will feel lighter, more shapely, and more agile after the procedure.
By targeting localized fat pockets in the body that detract from your contours’ attractiveness, Dr. Bell from Toronto Plastic Surgeons can significantly improve a patient’s overall body shape.
As it is not recommended that patients gain more than 5-10 pounds after their liposuction procedure, the procedure serves as a strong motivating factor to ensure that they adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Like every surgery, a liposuction procedure comes with a small chance of potential complications. The best thing patients can do to minimize the likelihood of complications is to select a trusted surgeon. The team at Toronto Plastic Surgeons has years of experience performing liposuction procedures. Significant complications are uncommon and, in the rare event they occur, are expertly managed.
By utilizing the latest technology devices such as BodyTite Lipo, SmartLipo, and VaserLipo, as well as a personable approach that is second-to-none, the Toronto Plastic Surgeons will be able to ensure that the outcome of the procedure matches the expectations of the patient. Rest assured, you’re in safe hands before, during, and after the procedure.

BodyTite Lipo (Radiofrequency energy) involves the release of radiofrequency through a small probe into the fat. The radiofrequency energy melts the fat and coagulates and seals small blood vessels, resulting in a very gentle aspiration (like aspirating a smoothie), resulting in far less bruising and swelling. The heat from the BodyTite™ is safely released with internal and external sensors, minimizing the risk of overheating. Over 12 months, the soft tissue contraction can be 40-50%, leading to better contour and shape. BodyTite has the best-reported safety controls and soft tissue contraction of any technology.
SmartLipo™ (laser energy) uses a small laser probe to emit laser energy directly into the fat before aspiration. This liquefies the fat and closes off tiny blood vessels to minimize bruising. The liquefication of the fat via laser facilitates easy aspiration with a microcannula.
The advantages of SmartLipo™ over VASERLipo™ are that the heat generated will lead to a simultaneous contraction and tightening of the skin, allowing for quality body contouring and skin tightening effects. Studies have shown that 6-12 months post-SmartLipo™, up to 17% contraction of the treated skin can occur, as well as a 25% improvement in elasticity. SmartLipo™ contraction minimizes the risks of irregularities and laxity. It optimizes the ability of patients to avoid more invasive incisional procedures like tummy tucks, arm lifts, thigh lifts, and neck lifts.
VaserLipo™ (ultrasound energy) involves the release of ultrasonic energy through a small probe into the fat. The ultrasound waves gently vibrate and implode the fat cell, creating a soft, liquefied, milkshake-like substance. Once the ultrasound has liquefied the fat, Dr. Bell uses a very small, blunt-tipped microcannula to gently aspirate and remove the liquefied fat from the unwanted localized areas of excess. The real advantage of VASERLipo™ is its gentle nature and its ability to preserve the fat for possible fat grafting procedures following the liposuction.
Patients who wish to remove fat from other troubled areas can undergo procedures such as a Brazilian butt lift, breast augmentation, or facial fat transplantation. As the gentle VASER ultrasound energy does use heat and kill fat cells, they remain viable for transplantation. The downside of VASERLipo™ is that it does not provide significant soft tissue contraction, so other energy-assisted devices must be used post-VASERLipo™ to ensure the suitability of the skin and soft tissue.
At about 12 weeks after undergoing a liposuction procedure, patients begin the second phase of their body contouring journey. During this phase, all liposuction patients undergo additional non-surgical skin tightening, localized fat reduction, and muscle toning procedures at no additional cost. The additional benefit of the non-surgical treatments is another reason The Toronto Plastic Surgeons are renowned for their excellent body contouring results.
As Canada’s leading non-surgical fat reduction and Coolsculpting center, we deploy multiple non-surgical lipo technologies such as CoolSculpting, SculpSure, Evolve, Vanquish, EMsculpt, BodyFX, Vanquish, Venus Freeze, Excilis, and VelaShape 3 to ensure you get a visible and permanent localized reduction of fat, skin tightening and muscle toning.
All liposuction procedures are performed within the comfort of the modern Toronto Plastic Surgeon SpaMedica Surgery suites. The surgery is entirely personalized and specifically designed by our expert team to match your desired results.
Prior to your surgery, a physician will administer anesthesia to ensure that the procedure is completely painless. Most liposuction patients have the procedure performed very comfortably under local anesthesia (called tumescent liposuction), oral sedation and laughing gas (nitrous oxide). If requested, IV sedation and even general anesthesia can be requested. However, these options are rarely required and only increase the risks of complications.
During the procedure, the Toronto Plastic Surgeons will use energy-assisted technology to remove unwanted fat, thereby reducing bulges, tightening the skin, and improving the contour of the targeted areas.
To ensure a successful surgery, the doctor will advise that you follow certain preparations in the weeks leading up to your procedure date:
Following your liposuction procedure, the Toronto Plastic Surgeons will give you detailed post-operative instructions to ensure a seamless recovery. Please keep in mind that you will be required to wear a tight-fitting compression garment for several weeks, as its presence will reduce swelling and tighten the skin. Patients can expect weight loss, as well as a dramatic improvement in body shape.
After the surgery, patients are required to wear a fitted compression garment to reduce swelling. The garment must be worn for 22 hours a day for three weeks.
Day 1: Patients can generally return to light, sedentary work.
Day 3: Patients can return to more strenuous work.
Week 3: The garment can now be worn for only 12 hours a day.
Week 6: The garment can now be removed completely and back to the gym.
Due to the anesthesia administered during the procedure, the patient will not feel any pain during the surgery. While it is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort after the surgery, there is no muscle work, so there is usually no extreme or long-term pain. In fact, this irritation can be easily controlled with oral medication prescribed by the Toronto Plastic Surgeons. In addition, it has been proven that energy-assisted technology (VASERLipo™, SmartLipo™, and BodyTite™) will cause significantly less discomfort than traditional liposuction techniques.
The Toronto Plastic Surgeons recommend that patients only consider liposuction if they are over the age of 19. While there is no age limit to liposuction, the procedure is not recommended for elderly patients due to the elasticity of their skin.
The accepted safe maximum total aspiration volume allowed in the province of Ontario is 5,000 cc or 5L of combined aspiration. This means that both the fat and lipo tumescent fluid should not exceed 3-4,000 cc or 3-4L of pure fat. If there are more fat pockets to be removed, a staged procedure can be offered, with more pockets treated 6 weeks or more after the first procedure.
When there is less than 2L of fat removed, lipo patients can usually go home several hours after the procedure. If more than 2L of fat is removed, as a general policy, it is safer for patients to stay overnight for monitoring and given blood-thinning agents to minimize the risk of deep vein clots and lung embolisms.
Ideal candidates for liposuction are already within 30 percent of a healthy weight range but happen to have stubborn localized fat pockets they can’t seem to get rid of through diet and exercise. While many patients would like to use liposuction as a weight loss strategy on its own, the reality is that most patients only lose about two to five pounds in total. Diet, exercise, and healthy habit formation are the key to significant weight loss as well as the key to maintaining the results of your liposuction procedure.
Tumescent liposuction, which is the gold standard of modern lipo, is not only more effective, safer, and less painful than traditional liposuction, but it does not require general anesthetic—the kind that puts you to sleep. This is good news, considering that it carries with it certain risks. Instead, a solution containing a local anesthetic and a drug known as epinephrine will be injected into the excessive fatty deposits of areas to be treated. This local anesthetic effectively blocks pain in these targeted spots while additionally reducing blood loss during the procedure, and keeping post-op bruising, swelling and pain to a minimum.
You won’t feel pain during your abdominal liposuction due to the anesthesia. However, experiencing some pain during your recovery is normal. Post-op, pain, swelling, bruising, soreness, and numbness are all common. Before your surgery, we will walk you through the type of anesthesia being used, as well as offer advice on any medications you can take beforehand to minimize pain even more. To minimize pain post-op, it’s important to take all prescribed medication, wear the recommended compression garments, care for your drains as instructed, stay well-hydrated, and get lots of rest to speed up the healing process.

Liposuction procedures are all geared at removing fat cells from a localized area of your body, and the fat that gets removed does indeed stay away for good. However, it is important to note that if you gain weight post procedure, your results may not last, or remain optimal. Typically, the more weight gained by a patient post-op, the less dramatic their results will be. The fat will stay away as long as you exercise, eat healthy, and maintain or hover within a few pounds of your new post liposuction weight.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure with a recovery period that lasts for a few weeks, while CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure that uses freezing temperatures to kill fat cells. The procedure doesn’t require any anesthesia at all, although post-op tenderness is normal. Ultimately, liposuction is more intensive, but allows more fat to be removed per session. CoolSculpting removes less fat per treatment, so you may need several sessions to achieve optimal results. Both procedures take several weeks to produce final results, and neither is superior to the other, though one may be better suited to your body. To determine the best option for you, schedule a consultation today.
There are several liposuction techniques, all of which use of a cannula connected to a vacuum to suction unwanted fat cells away. Tumescent liposuction is the most common, and involves the injection of a sterile anesthetic solution into the treatment area to make it easier to suction fat with less blood and pain. Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) uses sound wave energy to rupture fat cell walls and liquefy them for easier suction, while laser-assisted liposuction, AKA SmartLipo, uses a laser to liquefy the fat. Each type of liposuction has its purpose, and none are more effective than the others—it all depends on your personal goals, which will be thoroughly discussed with your doctor beforehand.
Liposuction is a serious surgery with multiple risks. Although these risks are dramatically mitigated by the presence of our highly qualified surgeons, it’s important to understand that not everyone is a good candidate. Risks during surgery include anesthesia complications, and nerve damage, while post-op complications worth considering include infection, swelling, blood clots, scarring, and changes in skin colour or sensation, as well as problems with the shape or contours of the body. It’s important to discuss all the risks of liposuction with your doctor before opting for the procedure.
The cost of liposuction in our clinic varies according to how much fat you would like to remove. Typically, we price by zone. For instance, pricing for a small zone liposuction procedure begins at $8,999 and a large zone starts at $13,999. Ultimately, a liposuction procedure that involves removing a minor amount of fat from the abdominal or stomach region will cost significantly less than a procedure which involves more intensive fat removal from the stomach area, or involves other complementary procedures such as lipo on the flanks and thighs. As with any medical procedure, the extent of your treatment will have a major effect on your final cost.
