We’ve discussed many times throughout the pandemic the effects COVID has had on people’s self-esteem and how they perceive themselves when they look in the mirror or video camera.

The “Zoom Boom” of 2020/2021 is still very much in effect and has created a surge in demand for cosmetic procedures worldwide.

The most common type of surgery we see at Toronto Plastic Surgeons Wellness Center is cosmetic facial surgery. There has been a huge demand for facial cosmetic surgery in Toronto, but what exactly does it mean? There’s no “all-in-one” face plastic surgery; instead, this is a general term meant to reference various procedures that can be performed to enhance the overall appearance of a patient’s face.

Here are some of the many facial cosmetic surgery options we offer at our clinic.

Facelift

As the name might imply, facelifts are a popular form of cosmetic face surgery. A facelift is a favourable option to many looking to get face surgery, as it is efficient in reducing the signs of aging. Some people report feeling their face appear a whole decade younger after receiving a facelift!

Facelifts can be used to address signs of aging, such as drooping brows, sagging jowls, and fine lines and wrinkles throughout the face.

There isn’t just one type of facelift, either. When you get a facelift in Toronto, there are several types to choose from. Our clinic offers the following varieties of women’s and men’s facelift procedures to help treat a range of concerns regarding our patients’ needs. This can include:

Mini Facelift

Mini Facelifts are the most minimally invasive forms face plastic surgery. Mini facelifts target the lower face, treating lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin in areas such as the jowls.

This is a preferred method for people with minor concerns about their face, such as mouth lines and drooping cheeks, but who do not yet display more prominent signs of aging, such as deep lines and excess wrinkles. Due to this, patients of a mini facelift are generally younger patients in their 30’s and 40’s.

Mid Facelift

Mid-facelifts are another form of facial plastic surgery – this time specializing in problems that occur in the mid-section of the face.

Leaving the upper portion of the face untouched, mid-facelifts can address areas such as the eyes, cheeks, and nose. When the skin is smoothed out and the underlying fat is repositioned, the middle of the face can appear far more rejuvenated.

Full Facelift

There are two methods for performing full facelifts: the deep-plane facelift and the SMAS facelift.

Deep Plane:

Deep-plane facelifts are among the most invasive facial cosmetic surgery options. This is because the incisions made during the procedure extend deeper into the skin than those of other facelift methods. The reason for the deeper incisions is that they allow for stronger, more precise handling of the facial tissue. Fat is repositioned, and skin is smoothed throughout the face.

Having a qualified, experienced surgeon is paramount for a deep-plane facelift, as the facial nerves and muscles are exposed during the procedure.

SMAS:

SMAS facelifts are another type of full facelift. This procedure targets the layer of tissue known as the Superficial Musculo-Aponeurotic System, which is typically ignored in other facelift methods. This layer supports the overall shape of your face and neck.

By targeting this layer during an SMAS procedure, signs of aging, such as sagging jowls and deep smile lines, can be addressed and corrected more thoroughly.

Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Being displeased with the eyes appearing tired, even when you’re not, is one of the most common reasons people seek out face surgery. Toronto eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure used to treat the appearance of drooping eyelids.

Drooping eyelids are among the primary reason that the eyes can appear tired. Drooping generally occurs when the muscles that hold the eyelid up weaken over time. Blepharoplasty is a facial plastic surgery procedure that helps tighten these muscles and remove excess skin that has drooped too far.

Dark circles and puffy bags under the eyes are another common reason people may appear tired. Bags under the eyes occur when the skin loses volume in the under-eye region, leaving an empty pocket beneath the skin. This empty pocket can begin to fill with fluid over time, which is how bags form. Blepharoplasty on the lower eyelids can help treat this by removing excess skin and tightening the remaining skin, leaving no further space for fluid to accumulate.

Beyond the cosmetic aspect, blepharoplasty can be necessary for those with severe eyelid drooping, where the sagging lid has begun to obstruct their vision and line of sight.

Double Chin Removal

When it comes to the chin and jawline, many people describe their ideal aesthetic as a more defined, streamlined line. Unfortunately, stubborn pockets of fat in the face can create a double chin. There are many reasons why double chins form on our faces. They can form for a variety of reasons, such as weight gain and general aging. Those who have experienced extreme weight loss can also find themselves frustrated by retention of a double chin, normally a result of having now loose skin in the region. It can even be a result of plain old genetics, such as a predisposition for weight gain or a less prominent jawline.

Because their causes are so widespread, double chins are an incredibly common condition. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery reported that in a survey, roughly 68% of respondents had some form of double chin.

During double chin surgery in Toronto, we work to reduce the appearance of a double chin, which can enhance the jawline and improve facial proportions.

Our clinic offers many methods for treating double chins, both surgical and non-surgical.

BodyTite

BodyTite is a revolutionary body-contouring procedure that uses temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy.

A minimal incision is made during the procedure, and an internal probe is inserted through it. We then use a handheld electrode device that is moved around the treatment area. The energy emitted between the electrode and probe heats the fat in the chin region until it melts to a more liquid state. By having the fat melt prior to removal, its extraction is far easier and less invasive, leading to less bruising and swelling during recovery.

The heat generated by BodyTite also stimulates soft-tissue contraction in the skin post-surgery, allowing the chin to achieve 40-50% soft-tissue contraction over the 12 months following surgery.

VASERLipo

VASERLipo™ stands for “vibration amplification of sound energy at resonance.” In plain speak, it is a device that uses ultrasound technology to help break up fat.

During this type of facial surgery, VASER™ uses ultrasonic waves to vibrate fat cells in the chin until they liquefy.

SmartLipo

SmartLipo is a procedure that uses heat, like Bodytite, but instead of an electrode to generate heat, it uses laser technology.

The laser probe delivers energy to the fat cells, generating the heat necessary to liquefy them for easier removal.

CoolSculpting

As previously mentioned, we have many forms of non-surgical methods for reducing the appearance of double chins. Among one of the leading methods is CoolSculpting.

CoolSculpting works by using freezing temperatures to break down and destroy fat cells in the double chin area.

As no incisions are made during this routine, CoolSculpting offers virtually no downtime and is less expensive than liposuction.

More specifically, the procedure takes approximately one hour, and you should begin to see fat cells disappearing between 6 and 12 weeks. For best results, we usually recommend patients return for two to three additional rounds of treatment, though this is not always necessary. Pricing can begin at $799 per treatment.

Otoplasty (Ears)

While it may seem like a slightly more obscure concern, otoplasty was the 5th most popular cosmetic surgery among men in 2020.

Those who seek out this type of facial cosmetic surgery usually report insecurity revolving around having ears that are “too large” or “stick out too far.” Often, the associated comparison patients refer their problems to “Dumbo ears.” In general, the concern appears less serious and more ‘dopey’.

During an otoplasty in Toronto, incisions are made behind the ears; then the cartilage is shaped and adjusted to achieve the desired angle and appearance. Any flared-out or protruding ears are corrected at this time by bringing them closer to the head.

Another common reason for this surgery is to correct earlobes that have been stretched over time by large jewelry pieces, such as plugs or other piercings.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty isn’t just one of the most popular types of cosmetic facial surgery; it’s one of the most popular types of plastic surgery in general.

Rhinoplasty was performed over 352,000 times in the year 2020 alone, making it the number one invasive cosmetic procedure that was performed, beating out procedures like liposuction and breast augmentations.

But what makes a nose job in Toronto such a popular facial cosmetic surgery?

On the cosmetic side of things, your nose is one of the most prominent central features of your face; it’s one of the first things people see when they look at you or the first thing you see when you look in the mirror. We also live in an age when selfies have become the primary source of photos of ourselves. The problem is, selfies have been reported to give the illusion that our noses are much bigger than they are – up to 30% larger in fact!

In terms of aesthetics, the desired effect in women’s rhinoplasty is to create a more slender, feminine appearance, such as a button or duchess nose.

While women undergo the majority of rhinoplasties, the procedure still managed to be the number one cosmetic surgery men got in 2020.

In men’s rhinoplasty, the goal is to enhance a masculine appearance with a straighter, more refined nose. This is usually achieved by straightening the bridge of the nose and widening the middle.

Rhinoplasty is also a popular cosmetic facial surgery because it can treat a significant breathing issue known as a deviated septum.

When your nose’s septum has deviated, either through natural formation or trauma, you may experience various breathing issues, such as snoring, sleep apnea, frequent congestion and nosebleeds, and overall difficulty achieving proper airflow.

While many people opt for a cosmetic update when treating a deviated septum, it’s not always necessary, and the procedure can usually be performed without cosmetic changes to the nose, barring any required changes to correct the deviation itself.

If you’re a man interested in rhinoplasty, Toronto Plastic Surgeon Wellness Centre offers male nose jobs and gives an in-depth explanation of the process and male rhinoplasty cost.

Cheek Implants

Cheek implants, also known as cheek augmentation, are commonly performed to enhance cheek volume, helping create fuller, more defined facial features.

A common reason for seeking cheek implants is to address facial asymmetry in the midface. While many women seek the procedure for more rounded cheeks, it is also popular among men, who seek sharper, more masculine cheekbones.
